The sliding board is flexible and has a very smooth surface in order to minimize resistance due to friction. It is used to transfer patients, e. g. from the edge of a bed to a wheelchair, toilet or car seat.

The patient does not have to be able to stand up but can make the change in position while seated, either with or without assistance.
